Registering with the Chamber of Commerce

Anyone who wants to start their own business, or start as an independent entrepreneur, registers with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK). Such a registration is there for a reason. Read here why KVK registration is important and what is involved.

Registration process

In the Netherlands, all companies and legal entities must register in the Trade Register. So also you if you are going to start as an independent entrepreneur. According to the law, a business exists if you independently provide goods or services to others, with the intention of making a profit. To register with the Chamber of Commerce, you must visit the office. Registration is done one week before or after starting business activities. Earlier appointment at the Chamber of Commerce is also possible to prepare your registration. After registration you will receive written confirmation of your registration. The Chamber of Commerce automatically passes on your details to the tax authorities. So you do not have to register there separately. You will also receive your own VAT number.

Registration fee

For registration in the Trade Register you pay a one-time registration fee of 50 euros. If you want to purchase an extract from your company at the time of registration, it costs 15 euros.

Legal form

Self-employed entrepreneurs can choose from several legal forms. The choice you make is based on legal and fiscal aspects. Most freelancers choose as legal form the sole proprietorship and in some cases a 'bv' (private company). If you choose a BV then you must always register with the Chamber of Commerce. If you choose a sole proprietorship then you must first meet a number of criteria for a company.
